Sometimes, an unplanned accidental hike can be quite rewarding! I was scouting locations for an upcoming model shoot and had planned to take a look at Ferndell, a section of Los Angeles’ Griffith Park renowned for its lush plant life. The path through Ferndell is a welcome respite from the surrounding city, although it can become busy on weekends. The trail is narrow and winds along a stream with deep green foliage all around.
After crossing a short bridge over the stream, the path opened out into a wide picnic area. To the right were two other paths leading up into the surrounding hills. After selecting a path to continue my hike and rounding a corner, I realized the Griffith Observatory was where the path was headed, providing great views along the way. A happy accident!
As you climb the path, at times, the Hollywood Sign comes into view.
The domes of the observatory dominate the view as you get closer.
At the top of the path, one enters the park-like grounds of the observatory and gets a look at the front entrance.
A bust of James Dean is on the west side of the grounds, with the Hollywood Sign in the background.
The architecture of the outside walkways feature arches and an Art Deco style.
Views of downtown Los Angeles to the south and Santa Monica to the west are breathtaking!
Leaving the observatory, as you head back down, you are treated once again to views of downtown Los Angeles through the trees.
